Soda



Soda, any of a group of sodium compounds derived from common salt (NaCl). This group contains sodium carbonate (Na2C03), or sal soda, a crystalline or powdered product with strong, acid-neutralizing, alkaline properties used in the production of paper and glass; sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), or baking soda, which is used in cooking and for the relief of stomach distress; and sodium hydroxide (NaOH), or caustic soda, which is used in the manufacture of chemicals, soap, aluminum, and paper.
