Soares, Mário Alberto Nobre Lopes (1924– ), Portuguese politician, premier (1976–78 and 1983–85) and president (1986–96). An opponent of dictator António Salazar, he was repeatedly imprisoned and exiled. Under Soares, Portugal entered the European Community (EC) in 1986.
