Snipe

Snipe, long-billed bird of the family Scolopacidae with flexible bill tips that can be opened below ground to grasp food items. Active mainly at dawn and dusk, snipes are birds of marshy areas or open moorland with large eyes set far back on the head. Extraordinarily well camouflaged, they rise sharply if disturbed at close quarters and escape with an erratic zigzag flight. In courtship many species produce loud whistling or drumming noises by vibration of the primaries or tail coverts in rapid dives.
