Jan Christiaan Smuts



Smuts, Jan Christiaan (1870–1950), Afrikaaner soldier and politician, prime minister of South Africa (1919–24 and 1939–48). A general in the South African War against the British, Smuts later cooperated with them to found the Union of South Africa (1910). He was made a field marshal during World War II and participated in the British military leadership.
