Alfred Emanuel Smith



Smith, Alfred Emanuel (1873–1944), U.S. politician elected governor of New York 4 times (1918, 1922–26). He was a Tammany Hall politician and a leading Democrat. Although supported by Franklin D. Roosevelt, Smith, the first Roman Catholic to run for the presidency, failed to be nominated in 1924 and was beaten by Herbert Hoover in 1928. When Roosevelt became president, Smith opposed the New Deal.
