Small-claims court, U.S. court set up to resolve lawsuits involving claims of less than $ 5000. First begun in 1913 in Cleveland, Ohio, small-claims courts now exist in every state. Cases frequently pertain to unpaid bills or debts, inferior product performance, or poorly provided services.
