Sleeping sickness



Sleeping sickness, serious disease caused by protozoan parasites and transmitted by the bite of the tsetse fly. Sleeping sickness is common in many areas of Africa. Symptoms include fever, headache, skin rash, swollen lymph nodes, and lethargy. The disease is named after the comalike state that may eventually result. Early diagnosis and drug treatment can lessen the sometimes fatal effects.
