Slate



Slate, fine-grained, low-grade metamorphic rock formed by the regional metamorphism of shale. The parallel orientation of platy minerals in the rock causes it to split evenly (slaty cleavage) in a plane that is perpendicular to the direction of the compressive metamorphic stress.
