Silt

Silt, fine deposit, or sediment, found on river or lake bottoms. Over long periods of time, natural forces break down rock into silt, which generally has a diameter of 0.00008 to 0.002 in (0.002–0.05 mm), approximately half that of a grain of sand. During floods, silt is deposited on land, helping to make it fertile.
