Silica



Silica, chemical compound (SiO2), properly called silicon dioxide. Sand, clay, granite, and sandstone contain forms of silica, which is also the major ingredient in glass. Quartz is an important crystalline form of silica used in optical tools and communications instruments. Opals are forms of amorphous silica polished and used in jewelry.
