Sierra Madre



Sierra Madre, vast mountain system of Mexico. The Sierra Madre Oriental, the eastern range, stretches 1,000 mi (1,609 km) south from the Rio Grande, forming the eastern edge of the central plateau and reaching 18,700 ft (5,700 m) in Orizaba. The Sierra Madre Occidental, running southward from Arizona and New Mexico, borders the plateau on the west, rising to over 10,000 ft (3,048 m). The Sierra Madre de Sur parallels the southwest coast.
