Sierra Club

Sierra Club, environmental organization of North America. Various committees and publications of the Sierra Club work to educate the public and protect the environment. Its founder, the naturalist John Muir, held that its purpose was to protect the Sierra Nevada mountain range of California, but today the club, with a main office in San Francisco, has branches across the United States and Canada. Total membership is about 350,000. The Sierra Club organizes outdoor recreational activities such as mountain climbing and wilderness trips. The club also sponsors lectures, films, and special exhibits and publishes beautifully illustrated books and calendars to promote an appreciation of wildlife and conservation.
