Sidon

Sidon, or Saida (pop. 80,000), city in southern Lebanon, on the Mediterranean Sea. Founded by the ancient Phoenicians, Sidon was prominent in shipbuilding and trade, and was famous for its bronzeware and purple dyes. The art of glassblowing probably originated in the city. Today, as a result of conflict within Israel, it has a large population of Palestinian refugees.
