Dmitri Shostakovich



Shostakovich, Dmitri (1906–75), Soviet composer. His works include the opera Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk (1930–32) and 15 symphonies, the most famous of which are the Fifth (1937), the Seventh—“Leningrad,” written during the siege of the city (1941)—and the Tenth (1953). Some of his music is notably patriotic. The Piano Quintet (1940) is one of his leading chamber music pieces.
