Shoran

Shoran, acronym for short-range navigation, an electronic system for establishing the position of a ship or aircraft. The craft being monitored sends a radio signal to 2 separate land stations, and the stations return the signals. Shoran calculates the distance to the craft by the time between transmission and reception of the signal. It can pinpoint the craft's position to within 1 part in 10,000. Its range is limited to 500 mi (800 km). First used during World War II, shoran has largely been replaced by more accurate systems.
