Shock treatment

Shock treatment, any of several types of therapy for mental illness that involve subjecting the patient to convulsions or seizures produced by electricity. It is now generally used only for hospitalized patients who are suicidal or severely depressed. Controversial because of its negative side effects, particularly amnesia and cardiac damage, shock therapy has been widely replaced by the use of tranquilizers.
