Sheffield



Sheffield (pop. 531,000), city in South Yorkshire, northern England. Known worldwide for its high-grade steel, metal products, cutting tools, cutlery, and silverware, Sheffield probably began as an Anglo-Saxon farming settlement in the 1000s. It grew into a center of steel production during the Industrial Revolution.
