Shawnee

Shawnee, Native North Americans of the Algonquian language group. They settled in the Ohio Valley during the 18th century, hunting and cultivating maize. In 1811 the Shawnee chief Tecumseh attempted to unite the Native Americans of the region, but his plan failed when the Shawnee were defeated at Tippecanoe by Gen. William Henry Harrison's army. The Shawnee were eventually resettled in Oklahoma, where about 2,250 still live.
