Ben Shahn



Shahn, Ben (1898–1969), Lithuanian-born U.S. artist whose realistic works treated social and political themes. Influenced by Diego Rivera and painters of the Parisian school, Shahn's style is characterized by harsh colors and simplified linear forms. Shahn created his own murals, posters, advertising art, and photography. He is particularly known for his series of political paintings on the Dreyfuss Affair, the Sacco-Vanzetti trial, and the Tom Mooney labor disputes.
