Seville



Seville (pop. 663,000), city of southwest Spain, capital of Seville province, and an important industrial center and port on the Guadalquivir River. Seville produces tobacco, machinery, and perfume, among other products, and exports wine and olives. The city is famous for its historic buildings, including the Gothic cathedral (1401–1519), and Holy Week processions. It was the birthplace of the painters Diego Velázquez and Bartolomé Murillo.
