Setter

Setter, 3 breeds of long-haired dog used in bird hunting: the English, the Gordon, and the Irish setter. Classified in the United States as sporting dogs, setters are derived from the medieval setting spaniel. They have long heads and tails, silky coats, and hanging ears. A setter is trained to locate game by smell, come to a point with its nose directed toward the bird, and retrieve the game after the shot.
