Meyer Schapiro



Schapiro, Meyer (1904– ), Lithuanian-born U.S. art historian and critic. One of the most highly regarded and influential art scholars in the United States, he taught for many years at Columbia Univ. Among his books are Romanesque Art (1977) and Modern Art: 19th and 20th Centuries (2 vols., 1978–9). He also wrote important essays, e.g., “The Nature of Abstract” (1937) and “Leonardo and Freud” (1956).
