George Beals Schaller



Schaller, George Beals (1933– ), U.S. zoologist and advocate for the protection of endangered species. Schaller's field research includes studies of the daily life and environment of lions and mountain gorillas of East Africa and giant pandas of China. He is author of The Year of the Gorilla (1964), The Deer and the Tiger (1967), and The Serengeti Lion: A Study of Predator-Prey Relations (1972), for which he won the 1973 National Book Award for the sciences. In 1972 he became research associate and coordinator at the Center for Biology and Conservation, New York Zoological Society. In 1980 Schaller, another U.S. conservationist, and a group of Chinese scientists went on a World Wildlife Fund mission in China to locate and rescue pandas.
