Scalawag

Scalawag, in U.S. history, derisive term employed by Southern Democrats for Southern whites who cooperated with Republican Reconstruction governments after the Civil War. Although some scalawags sought personal gain, many sought to bring about educational and social reforms, including laws beneficial to blacks. The Southern Democrats gradually regained control in the 1870s.
