Sargasso Sea

Sargasso Sea, oval area in the North Atlantic, of special interest as the spawning ground of American eels, many of whose offspring drift across the Atlantic to form the European eel population. Bounded on the east by the Canaries Current, on the south by the North Equatorial Current, and on the west and north by the Gulf Stream, it contains large masses of seaweed.
