São Paulo



São Paulo (pop. 9,480,400), largest city and industrial center of Brazil; capital of São Paulo state, it lies 225 mi (362 km) southwest of Rio de Janeiro. Founded in 1554, it grew rapidly with the development of the coffee industry in the 1880s (it still sends coffee to the port of Santos), and its other industries are diverse. It is the site of 4 universities and numerous cultural institutions.
