Santiago de Cuba (pop. 405,000), second-largest city in Cuba, founded in 1514 by Diego de Velazquez de Cuellar, and capital of Oriente province. The center of Cuba's mining industry, Santiago is also a shipping center for iron, manganese, sugar, coffee, and tobacco. The Morro Castle is one of its landmarks.
