George Santayana



Santayana, George (1863–1952), Spanish-born U.S. philosopher, writer, and critic. He was an influential writer on aesthetics in books like The Sense of Beauty (1896). In The Life of Reason (1905–06) he emphasized the importance of reason in understanding the world, but was skeptical of what one can really know. Skepticism and Animal Faith (1923) suggests a relationship between faith and knowledge.
