San Quentin



San Quentin, California's oldest prison, opened in 1852. Its normal capacity is 2,700 inmates, but it has held as many as 3,900 prisoners. Located about 10 mi (16 km) from San Francisco, San Quentin is a maximum security prison for prisoners convicted of violent crimes. The prison administration provides counseling, education, and work-release programs.
