San José



San José (pop. 801,300), western Californian city (incorporated 1850) about 50 mi (80 km) southeast of San Francisco in the Santa Clara Valley, the seat of Santa Clara County. The economy has long been centered around fruit processing; since World War II heavy industry has also been developed, including aerospace, chemical and electronics firms. San Jose State College (founded 1857) is the oldest state-run college of California. Founded in 1777, San Jose was the first state capital of California (1849–52).
