Sanderling



Sanderling, shorebird (Calidris alba) belonging to the snipe and sandpiper family. It stands about 8 in (20 cm) high. Sanderlings breed on Arctic beaches and migrate south in winter to sandy beaches everywhere. They feed on small shellfish and insects that wash up on the shore. Their feathers are rust or gray on the upper parts and pure white underneath.
