Sámos



Sámos, one of the Sporades islands, southeastern Greece, in the Aegean Sea, separated from Turkey by the Sámos Strait. The island, 184 sq mi (476 sq km), yields crops of olives and grapes. For a time under Turkish control, it became part of Greece in 1913. It was the birthplace of the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras and is known as the home of Aesop, the semilegendary creator of fables.
