Salt Lake City



Salt Lake City (pop. 1,100,000), capital of Utah, seat of Salt Lake County, on the Jordan River in north-central Utah, near the Great Salt Lake. Founded in 1847 by Brigham Young, who led a band of Mormons from persecution, it is the world center of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. The city surrounds the Temple (1853–93) at its center. It is a commercial and industrial center for minerals, electronics, oil refining, and chemicals. Other sights include the State Capitol (1914) and the Brigham Young Memorial (1897).
