Salonika



Salonika (pop. 396,300), port city in northern Greece, on the Salonika Gulf, established c.316 B.C., by the Macedonian king Cassander. Known as Thessaloniki in Greek, the city is now an industrial center producing textiles, soap, tobacco, minerals and leather products. It is also the second most important home of modern Greek culture, after Athens.
