Peter Salem



Salem, Peter (1750?–1816), former black slave, American Revolutionary soldier. Salem obtained his freedom by enlisting in the colonial army. He distinguished himself at the Battle of Bunker Hill, near Boston, June 17, 1775, saving the colonial troops from surrender by shooting British Major John Pitcairn, thus giving the troops time to retreat.
