Salamis

Salamis, or Koulouri (Greek, “baker's crescent”), Greek island in the Saronic Gulf (arm of the Aegean Sea between Attica and the Peloponnisos), about 10 mi (16 km) west of Athens. The rocky, crescent-shaped island, 37 sq mi (95 sq km) in area, supports little agriculture, and most residents now work in the shipping industry or in businesses in Athens. In the Battle of Salamis (480 B.C.), fought at sea by the Persians and the Athenians, Themistocles led the Greeks to a decisive victory.
