Saint Thomas



Saint Thomas, mountainous, heavily cultivated, tropical island (32 sq mi/83 sq km) of the U.S. Virgin Islands, West Indies, in the westernmost part of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean Sea. The economy rests on tourism but includes cattle-raising and meat-packaging. St. Thomas was settled by the Danish in 1672. The islanders have been U.S. citizens since 1927 and are administered by the U.S. Department of Interior. They are governed by a locally elected governor and senate.
