Saint George's

Saint George's (pop. 7,500), capital, chief port, and industrial center of Grenada, in the West Indies. Originally settled by the French in 1650 at a location near present-day St. George's, the current site was established in 1705. In 1783 control of the town, on the southwestern coast, passed to the British, who soon made it the government headquarters for all of the Windward Islands. A center of tourism, St. George's gained its independence in 1974.
