Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré

Sainte-Anne-de-Beaupré, village and Roman Catholic shrine in Mont-morency County, southern Quebec, Canada, on the St. Lawrence River near the mouth of the Ste.-Anne River. The village was first settled in 1650. A chapel was built there in 1658 by shipwrecked French sailors who believed they were saved from death by their prayers to Saint Anne, patron saint of sailors. There were subsequent reports of miracle cures in the area, and the village became a pilgrimage center. A basilica was built as a shrine in 1876 and rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1922.
