Ruth Saint Denis



Saint Denis, Ruth (Ruth Dennis; 1878?–1968), U.S. dancer, choreographer, and teacher, whose work strongly influenced modern dance. Deeply interested in ethnic and U.S. dances, music visualizations, and Hindu and other Eastern philosophies, she staged her first major success, the solo Radha, in 1906. She and her husband, Ted Shawn, ran the influential Denishawn School and widely touring Denishawn Company (both, 1915–32).
