Sacagawea, or Sacajawea (1787?–1812?), guide and interpreter (1804–5) for the Lewis and Clark expedition. Sacagawea means “Bird Woman.” A member of the Shoshone tribe, she was captured by a hostile tribe and sold to Toussaint Charbonneau, who became interpreter for the expedition. Her help was invaluable in obtaining supplies from the Shoshone.
