Rust

Rust, brownish-red substance that forms on the surface of iron or steel when exposed to oxygen in the air. Rust both corrodes and weakens metal. It is brittle and easily flakes off the metal. Rust can be prevented by coating metal objects with heavy greases or spray-on plastics.
