Ruffed grouse

Ruffed grouse (Bonasa umbellus), bird in the grouse subfamily, Tetraoni-nae, in the family Phasianidae. When the grouse beats it wings in the air, a loud drumming sound is created that can be heard far away. These birds, which measure up to 17 in (43 cm) long, display a white neck collar of thick feathers on an otherwise brownish body. In winter their legs grow thick feathers for warmth, and their feet develop webs for walking on top of the snow. They reside in the forests of North America. The ruffed grouse is the state bird of Pennsylvania.
