Ruby, deep-red gemstone, a variety of corundum colored by a minute proportion of chromium ions, found in Upper Burma, Thailand, and Sri Lanka. Synthetic rubies, used to make ruby lasers, have been produced by the Verneuil flame-fusion process (1902).
