Royal Canadian Mounted Police

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canadian federal police force. It was formed in 1873 as the Northwest Mounted Police to bring law and order to the new Canadian territories. In 1874, the persistence and determination of the 300 men on the force became legendary: “The Mounties always get their man.” In 1920 it absorbed the Dominion Police and received its present name and duties. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police serves as a provincial police force in the nation's provinces (excluding Ontario and Quebec).
