Henry Augustus Rowland



Rowland, Henry Augustus (1848–1901), U.S. physicist and engineer. He developed the concave diffraction grating in which lines are ruled directly onto a concave spherical surface, thus eliminating the need for additional mirrors and lenses. He also determined the mechanical equivalent of heat and of the ohm.
