Henri Rousseau



Rousseau, Henri (1844–1910), self-taught French primitive painter much admired by Gauguin, Picasso, and others. Rousseau is known mainly for his portraits, landscapes, and jungle paintings, such as The Sleeping Gypsy (1897) and The Hungry Lion (1905).
