Rostock



Rostock (pop. 246,000), city in eastern Germany, located on the Baltic Sea and the Warnow River. It is an important port city through which ships, machinery, and supplies for the petroleum industry are transported. Founded in 1218, it became an important member of the medieval Hanseatic League. The University of Rostock (1419) is also located here.
