Rosenberg, husband and wife, the only U.S. citizens put to death in peacetime for espionage. Julius (1918–53) and Ethel (1915–53) were convicted in 1951 for passing atomic secrets in World War II to the USSR, then a U.S. ally. They were electrocuted on June 19, 1953.
