Rochester



Rochester (pop. 245,000), large industrial city in upstate New York, on the banks of the Genesee River, near its confluence with Lake Ontario. The community was laid out by Col. Nathaniel Rochester in 1811, and it became a commercial and industrial center within 20 years. Modern Rochester is known for the manufacture of cameras and film equipment, consumer goods, and machinery and precision instruments. The city is the home of the University of Rochester and the Eastman School of Music.
